Biography

Otto de Kat (Rotterdam, 1946) is the pen name of publisher, poet, novelist and former literary critic Jan Geurt Gaarlandt.
He studied theology and Dutch Literature at the university of Leiden. And after his work as a literary critic he became a publisher. In 1986 he founded his own company Balans Publishing House in Amsterdam, which he sold in 2002. In 2014 he and his successor Plien van Albada bought the old firm back.

His novels have been translated into English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish (see Translations), via his agent Liepman Agency in Zürich
He is married to Francoise Kist, and has a daughter and a son.
